David Alan Grier is perhaps one of the busiest actors working today. The Tony-winner joins Kyle Meredith to discuss some of his latest roles, including playing Santa opposite Eddie Murphy in Amazon’s Candy Cane Lane, co-starring in The Color Purple (one of the best films of the year), returning to Broadway’s A Soldier’s Play for the third time (!), and the upcoming The American Society of Magical Negroes.
The comedy and drama legend tells us how, early on, he based the rhythm of his career off of what he saw Michael Keaton doing in the ’80s. That set him on a path to a wild career, and he touches on many of the projects during the chat, from the uncomfortable clock costume he wore in the stage version of Beauty and the Beast to working alongside Murphy again after 30 years. Grier then digs into the role of Rev. Samuel Avery in The Color Purple, a story he had twice auditioned for in the past but never landed.
Elsewhere, we get to hear about Grier joining the cast of A Soldier’s Play for the third time and what it was like to work alongside Samuel L. Jackson, and get his thoughts on his next film, The American Society of Magical Negroes.
