Mixtapes is a video interview series from Consequence that examines artists’ tastes via a smattering of absurd situations. For the latest edition, Angie McMahon soundtracks messages from your future self, pet turtles running away, and more.

Just last Friday (October 27th), singer-songwriter and indie rocker Angie McMahon returned with her first full-length project of new material since her 2019 debut. One of our favorite records of the month, Light, Dark, Light Again finds McMahon opening up her sound and her psyche, delivering 13 vast and deeply emotive new tunes. To celebrate the new release, we sat down with the artist, pulled out the ol’ fishbowl, and played a round of our favorite new game: Mixtapes.

Be it pet turtles running away or premonitions delivered via dreams, McMahon has the perfect song pairing for any situation. Her picks range from feel-good jams of empowerment (like Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”) to gentle folk ballads (like Big Thief’s “Mary”) to rocking ragers (like Sleater-Kinney’s “No Anthems”). The result is a well-rounded, versatile playlist you’ll be able to throw on anytime — and you can, by finding the full thing below!
