Willie Nelson was welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday.

The 90-year-old music legend was introduced by Dave Matthews, who shared various anecdotes about Nelson’s altruism and weed smoking

Nelson then used his remarks to call on the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame to induct fellow members of his supergroup, The Highwaymen: “Now that Johnny [Cash] and I have been inducted, I want to give a plug for Waylon [Jennings] and Kris [Kristofferson].”

Alongside his son Micah and Lukas and members of his touring band, Nelson performed “Whiskey River” with Don Was and Chris Stapleton; “Crazy” with Sheryl Crow; and “On the Road Again” with Matthews, Crow, and Stapleton.

In an interview with Stephen Colbert ahead of Friday’s induction, Nelson said that when he got the call from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he “thought they had the wrong number.” He also explained that he doesn’t see country music — or any music — as too different from rock ‘n’ roll. “To me, there’re only so many notes, and so many chords, and so many ways to use them,” he said. “I like rock ‘n’ roll, I like country, I like classical music, I like all kinds of music. So, I call it all rock ‘n’ roll.”

The 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class also includes Kate Bush, Rage Against the Machine, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, George Michael, DJ Kool Herc, and The Spinners.
