Two for the Road is a series in which two artists touring together chat about playing shows, life backstage, and more. The latest installment of the series features Static-X’s Tony Campos and Sevendust’s Lajon Witherspoon, with a surprise appearance by Dope’s Edsel Dope — resulting in a one-off “Three for the Road.”
Static-X and Sevendust are about to embark their co-headlining “Machine Killer Tour” with special guests Dope. In advance of the outing, Static-X bassist Tony Campos and Sevendust singer Lajon Witherspoon connected via Zoom for Consequence’s “Two for the Road” series, and were soon joined in the conversation by a surprise guest, Dope frontman Edsel Dope.
The Fall 2023 leg of the “Machine Killer Tour” kicks off October 6th in Houston and runs through a November 6th gig in Los Angeles. It will be followed by a recently announced Winter 2024 leg that launches February 1st in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and wraps up February 27th in Newport, Kentucky. Tickets can be purchased via Ticketmaster, with sold-out gigs available via StubHub.
Witherspoon and Campos kicked off the conversation, with each of them sharing their first exposures to each other’s bands. Campos recalled seeing Sevendust open for Coal Chamber in 1998, and watching their set in amazement: “We were like, ‘Who the fuck are these guys?!?” Witherspoon remembered Static-X having “a whole different swagger” about them.
A few minutes in, Witherspoon noticed a new guest in the Zoom waiting room, and it was none other than Edsel Dope. The Dope singer immediately expressed his excitement about the 2023-2024 tour, which sees the three bands reprising a tour package from 1999.
Edsel went on to reminisce about the first time he met Witherspoon, telling the Sevendust singer, “I met you at Hammerstein Ballroom when [Sevendust] were on tour with Limp Bizkit. … What made me know that you were like the sweetest soul in the world is that you had never heard my music — all you knew was that my band was kinda poppin’ in New York, and that I had this endorsement from an old friend of yours … and I handed you a demo tape, and the first thing you did with it, you looked at the A&R person from your label, and you said, ‘You have to sign this band.'”
Elsewhere during the chat, the three musicians shared a few funny “Spinal Tap” moments that have happened to them onstage, and discussed the early concerts they saw as kids that inspired them to pursue music themselves. One fun story involves Campos and a friend trying to roll joints with toilet paper at an Iron Maiden show.
