For this special edition of our Crate Digging series, we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop by discussing 10 essential hip-hop albums with Haviah Mighty, who shouts out a few Canadian favorites in particular. Check it out below, and be sure to see our exclusive merch featuring our Hip-Hop 50 design at the Consequence Shop.

“I love the feeling that putting a body of work together gives me,” says Haviah Mighty, teasing new music in the works. “It fuels me to work on the next thing almost immediately.”

The Canadian artist, still fresh off the heels of a 2023 project titled Crying Crystals, explains to Consequence that she’s not necessarily the type who can sit still for a long time. She always has one eye on the horizon, toying with things she can experiment with next. “What’s the next project I can assign myself?” she asks. “I’m relishing in the impact Crying Crystals is having on the listeners and the way people are enjoying it. But what’s the next sonic shift that I can take?”

The idea of sonic shifts is deeply present in the albums she lists for this edition of Crate Digging; her own Crying Crystals melts between genres with a practiced ease, and it’s clear that Haviah Mighty is an artist drawn to those spaces between. She admires artists who push the boundaries on production and break the rules, while also remaining consistent. She also makes sure to shout out quite a few fellow Canadian artists, including Toronto’s Mustafa and Clairmont the Second.

“I think every day continues to affirm that this is my calling,” she says. “It’s a beautiful thing to feel that, and I’m so grateful to participate in conversations around 50 years of hip-hop. ‘Affirming’ is the word I keep going back to.”

Get to know Haviah Mighty by spending some time with a few of her favorite records, including some fellow Canadians worthy of our time and attention. Also check out her video for “Honey Bun/Room Service” below.
