Turnstile and BADBADNOTGOOD have surprise released a collaborative EP titled New Heart Designs.
The three-song EP includes re-imaginings of tracks from Turnstile’s acclaimed 2021 album Glow On: “Mystery,” “Alien Love Call” (featuring Blood Orange), and “Underwater Boi.” Along with the EP’s release, Turnstile have shared a companion video containing all three songs that was shot and edited by Alex Henery.
Sonically, the tracks are mostly based on BADBADNOTGOOD’s interpretation of the arrangements. The big chords and slam-dance inducing rhythms of the originals are replaced with lush jazz instrumentation — per BADBADNOTGOOD’s general M.O. — with the vocals of Turnstile’s Brendan Yates layered on top.
Far from mere remixes, these takes almost sound like entirely different songs, and they should appeal to fans of either band.
Meanwhile, Turnstile have a series of UK/European shows and festival appearances on the horizon, followed by US festival slots at Riot Fest, Furnace Fest, Louder Than Life, and Aftershock in September and October. Pick up tickets here.
