Laufey joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the intersection of jazz and pop, her experience studying music, and how it all comes together on her new LP, Bewitched.
The Icelandic singer-songwriter explores the story of the new record, how it was based around independence and love, and how she found jazz after growing up in a classical environment. “I have always had a lower voice,” she explains. “As much as I love pop music and new music, I kind of heard more of myself in the jazz singers of [the past]. So, like, the Ella Fitzgeralds and Billie Holidays and the Peggy Lees, so I naturally fell into singing that kind of music.”
Laufey goes on to discuss her experience at the Berkeley School of Music and the importance of understanding the business side of the industry as an artist. She then explores the runaway success of her single “From The Start,” working with Semisonic songwriter Dan Wilson, and writing a letter to her 13-year-old self to say that things are going to get a whole lot better.
