Singer-songwriter Slayyyter has long found inspiration for her music from movies, and David Lynch’s 1986 opus Blue Velvet is one towards which she always finds herself gravitating. Finding it in the midst of a Lynch binge while in the studio, it quickly emerged as one of her favorite films of all time.
For this unofficial Halloween episode of The Spark Parade, Slayyyter speaks on why she believes Blue Velvet had such an impact on her. She dives into how the juxtaposition of the film’s beauty and unsettling nature inspired her, along with how the performances continue to stick with her.
“A lot of the actors in this movie, I’ve seen in other things that are not this kind of material. I know Kyle MacLachlan from Sex and the City,” she explains. “I feel like seeing everyone in this serious kind of drama, I’m really drawn to things like that. There’s almost B-movie elements to it. It’s just so stylistically on-point.”
She goes on to speak about the visual style of the film, her experiences with David Lynch’s other work, and the ways that the set design of Blue Velvet helped to shape the cover of her new album, STARFUCKER.
