Nathan Willett and Matt Maust of the long-running and acclaimed indie rock band Cold War Kids grew up as huge U2 fans. Their love of the band came to a head with the release of Davis Guggenheim’s documentary From the Sky Down, which covered the recording process of the legendary Irish band’s album Achtung Baby.

On this episode of The Spark Parade, the two get into what they love so much about the documentary before gushing about the album itself. Nathan dives into the new process that the band came up with that was shown in the documentary, and why he felt that was so essential to U2’s new sound.

“I just love that, the idea of ‘we didn’t really have songs then.’ It’s like, what are you talking about?” Willett says. “You were a stadium band playing ‘With or Without You,’ you’re not considering that a song? But I love it. It’s so weird to say, but I think it was true for them.”

They spend more time getting into the ways From the Sky Down captures the experience of playing in a band, the surprises that came from watching it, and how it reminded Maust of why he got into music in the first place.
