Track by Track is our recurring feature series in which artists guide readers through each song on their latest release. Today, indie rock experimentalist Sen Morimoto gives us insight into his new album Diagnosis.

Multi-instrumentalist and singer Sen Morimoto is back today (Friday, November 3rd) with a new album, Diagnosis, out via his own label Sooper Records in partnership with City Slang. The follow-up to his 2021 self-titled LP, this album sees him building on his experimental DIY sound that he’s polished working alongside the likes of KAINA and NNAMDÏ, among others. The jazz-tinged album shows him firing on all cylinders, bringing his distinct voice and dynamic production to a larger stage than ever before.

With a mix of singing and rapping on the title track, released as a single ahead of the album, Morimoto picks up the intensity, speaking on everything from the banks to the police in a scathing indictment on capitalism. Adept at covering everything else under the sun, from nostalgia to nature to joy and grief, Morimoto presents himself as someone with a lot to say, and everybody should be tuning in to hear it.

“I grew up in a state forest, and I walked through it almost every day to go to my friend’s farm. It was a pretty simple path but sometimes I would find myself lost if I wasn’t paying close attention,” he tells Consequence of the track “Surrender.” “On one of these walks, I happened upon a massive boulder in a small clearing in the woods, and it gave me that extraordinary feeling that only nature really has the power to.”

Setting the stage for this journey of a new project, Morimoto looks toward the future with his incredibly distinct sound, while keeping a foot in the present with the pressing themes he sings about.

Listen to Sen Morimoto’s Diagnosis below, followed by his track-by-track breakdown of the project.
