The Lost Boys is getting the musical treatment. The 1987 vampire-themed horror-comedy is being adapted for the stage by Parade’s Michael Arden, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s David Hornsby, and more.
Though no casting details nor production timeline have been made public, Deadline and other outlets have confirmed that work is underway, with Arden directing and Hornsby writing the book alongside Chris Hoch (a Broadway actor who appeared in Shrek the Musical, Matilda, and more). Additionally, Ethan Popp (Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) will serve as Musical Supervisor, with the pop band The Rescues contributing original music.
The Lost Boys musical will be produced by three veteran actors: Patrick Wilson (2004’s Phantom of the Opera, 2018’s Aquaman), James Carpinello (Broadway productions of Saturday Night Fever, Xanadu, and Rock of Ages), and Marcus Chait (Broadway productions of The Pirate Queen and Urban Cowboy). According to Deadline, the show will be “produced by special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures.”
The original version of The Lost Boys made waves when it debuted, and has become a celebrated early entry in the canon of teen vampire flicks. Directed by Joel Schumacher, the film boasted a cast featuring the then-ascendant young actors Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, and Jason Patric. In 2022, Feldman reflected on the film’s 35th anniversary, calling it bittersweet for reminding him of “people that [he’s] lost.”
Earlier this year, Arden won the Tony Award for Best Direction/Musical for Parade, which starred Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond. On Wednesday, December 13th, it was announced that the show will be heading out on the road for a North American tour in 2025, with casting details to come.
